I live in the Waitakere hills on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand, in a lovely area surrounded by trees and birds.
I have enjoyed making things for as long as I can remember. I was lucky to have a mother and two grandmothers who were skilled at knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, gardening and baking, so I had a go at these from an early age. I even tried tatting once. As a girl who loved her dolls, I practised my handiwork by making them clothes. It's no wonder I've gone back to making baby-sized things and dolls clothes.
As an adult my sister encouraged me to take a mosaic class with her. I became hooked, and enjoy making mosaics using glass, ceramic tiles, vintage china, jewels and other ‘treasures’. More recently I have been experimenting with polymer clay. I love the colours it comes in and the fact that you can mix your own. What fun! There are so many techniques still to explore.
So you see, I don't limit myself to one crafty pursuit, but I do have to remind myself that I can't do it all. Well, not all at once anyway! I go through phases, picking up one craft and temporarily putting down another.
I love mixed media art and am drawn to organic shapes. You will find flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, curves and spirals featured in my work. While I do appreciate gentle colour schemes, it is vibrant, bold, interesting colour that lifts my spirit and warms my heart. Sometimes I flick through stylish home and garden magazines thinking yes, that's all very well and good, but where's the colour? No monochromatic rooms or highly structured gardens for me!
